95% support Northbank East
Peel have released the results of their public exhibition held on the 6th and 7th March recording over 95% of people supporting the Northbank East proposals that are part of the Wirral Waters development.
The exhibition attracted hundreds of visitors over the two days where visitors were encouraged to fill in a questionnaire so that Peel could find out what the local people felt about the scheme. Results showed that from the 157 questionnaires completed, more than 95% of people support the scheme. Many hundreds more voiced their support.
Results came from near and far including all neighbourhoods enclosing the docks, the wider Birkenhead and Wallasey neighbourhoods, across all of the Wirral peninsula and from Liverpool.
A huge difference in the age range of people visiting the stand at the Market and then filling in the questionnaire was also seen – the youngest being just 15, and the oldest over 81!
The results also revealed that providing a choice of new homes including family apartments with roof gardens and the creation of new offices and workspace for local occupiers to start/expand their business were the most important elements of Northbank East scheme (over 87% and 85% respectively).
Based on the findings of the results, Peel Holdings are working with Wirral MBC and their partners to address those issues voiced at the event, particularly providing a wider choice of new homes, the creation of new offices and workspace for local occupiers, the need to progress the scheme as soon as possible and ensuring that new developments do not undermine existing shops.
Lindsey Ashworth, Development Director at Peel said, “The only way to find out what the local people really think is to pitch up in the heart of the community and where better than Birkenhead Market to do this. We have got to know so many Wirral people now since we started a few years ago and they accept that it’s a difficult road ahead in terms of getting planning permission and that it will take time to get to a position where we can start on site. We are in difficult times at the moment but it’s due to the support and patience of the Wirral people and the Council that we have carried on."
